Detailed Look at the 1970 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am has long bridged the gap between the design palettes of two distinct eras. Its form both draws from the curves reminiscent of the 1960s and transitions towards the sleek, aerodynamic lines that were beginning to emerge. This is evident in the second-generation models, which managed to embody a sophisticated blend of movement and potency at once.

Those unfamiliar might not remember that vehicles such as the Trans Am were conceived in times when aesthetic and mechanical paradigms were in flux. Despite these fluctuations, the Firebird emerged undeterred, eventually embedding itself in the cultural zeitgeist of the 1970s, highlighted by its feature in the movie ‘Smokey and the Bandit.’

Through the years where the muscle car era faced challenges like emission controls and shifting preferences towards smaller engines, the Firebird maintained its allure. Today, pristine models of the car have been known to fetch significant sums in the collectors’ market.

Consider a Lucerne Blue 1970 model that very recently became the subject of spirited bidding, though eventually, the vehicle did not change hands as the reserve was not met. The bids reached an impressive $72,500, testament to the car’s enduring appeal and value.

Restoration and Specifications

This particular Trans Am has undergone a meticulous restoration. The vehicle was taken down to the frame, stripped by soda blasting, and received a fresh coat of its original Lucerne Blue paint accentuated by white and black stripes. Enhancements did not stop at the exterior, with the rear bumper re-chromed and the front fenders renewed.

The car sits on ‘reproduction’ 15″ Rally II wheels, wrapped with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires, while the original Rally II wheels complete with Firestone tires accompany the sale.

Inside, an expansive sweep of bright blue vinyl covers the seats, complementing the uniform blue color scheme that extends to the door panels, headliner, and carpeting. Adding to the aesthetics, details such as the center console, an air conditioning system, and engine-turned metal trim dashboard accents cultivate a sense of luxury within the cabin.

Beneath the Trans Am’s hood lies a meticulously overhauled Ram Air III 400ci V8 engine, joined by a four-barrel carburetor. The powerplant’s ratings stand firm at 335 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, enough to deliver robust performance that matches the vehicle’s aggressive styling.

Market Appeal and Ownership Prospects

The market for classic Trans Ams like this 1970 model in Florida varies, with similar cars having been sold for upwards of $80,000 or in the lower end near the $60,000 range, depending on factors such as condition, originality, and provenance.

The seller’s decision to withdraw the auction listing suggests a belief that the car can command a higher premium, an assertion not without merit given the vehicle’s painstaking restoration and powerful V8 engine. Willing collectors might yet have the opportunity to contend for this exquisite piece of automotive history.

The enthusiasm for the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am remains strong among aficionados and collectors, who regard these cars as more than mere vehicles – they are tokens from a time of automotive greatness, emblems of power, and design ingenuity.

The Affordable Power: Cadillac’s V-Series Is The Best Sleeper Car You Never Knew You Needed

Looking for a thrilling driving experience without breaking the bank? Cadillac’s V-Sport models offer an enticing solution, blending power and performance with understated elegance. By far, the best sleeper car, once hailed for their premium features and impressive capabilities, are now available at prices that rival everyday sedans like the Honda Accord.

The Best Sleeper Car is the CTS-V

In the mid-2010s, Cadillac introduced the V-Sport trim to cater to enthusiasts seeking a balance between luxury and performance. Unlike typical cosmetic upgrades seen in competitors like BMW’s M Sport or Audi’s S-Line, Cadillac’s V-Sport models were genuine performance machines. With only two models receiving the V-Sport treatment, namely the CTS and XTS, Cadillac ensured that each car delivered a potent driving experience.

The XTS V-Sport, while more reserved in appearance, packed a punch under the hood. Equipped with a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 engine producing 410 horsepower, paired with advanced features like all-wheel drive with torque vectoring and a limited-slip differential, the XTS V-Sport offered a compelling blend of power and luxury. Despite its impressive performance credentials, the XTS V-Sport commanded a hefty price tag, starting at $73,340 when fully loaded.

On the other hand, the CTS-V Sport was designed for driving enthusiasts seeking adrenaline-pumping performance. With a starting price just under $62,000, the CTS-V Sport boasted a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 engine delivering 420 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. Enhanced with adaptive magnetorheological shocks, Brembo brakes, and an electronic limited-slip rear differential, the CTS-V Sport outperformed its predecessor, the first-generation CTS-V powered by a 5.7-liter V8 engine. Accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, the CTS-V Sport offered a thrilling driving experience unmatched by its competitors.

Our Pick For The Best Sleeper Car

Today, as these models age, they represent exceptional value for performance enthusiasts. While low-mileage examples may still command prices close to $30,000, higher-mileage options are available at significantly lower costs.

For example, a 2014 CTS-V Sport recently sold for $22,998 in Florida, boasting just over 62,000 miles on the odometer. Similarly, an XTS V-Sport with 85,519 miles on it was listed for just $20,995 in Mississippi. Despite their age and mileage, these V-Series Cadillac models offer unmatched performance and luxury at an unbeatable price point.

If you’re in the market for a fast, comfortable, and understatedly stylish ride, look no further than Cadillac’s V-Series sleeper cars. With their potent engines, advanced features, and affordable prices, these vehicles represent the epitome of automotive value for enthusiasts and top our list of the best sleeper car. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to own a piece of automotive history that continues to deliver exhilarating performance on the road.

GM Expands Recall on Trucks Over Faulty Tailgates

In a recent development, General Motors (GM) has expanded its recall of trucks in North America due to a potentially dangerous issue with their tailgates. The recall now includes a staggering 820,000 vehicles sold in the U.S. and Canada, raising concerns among consumers and highlighting the importance of vehicle safety standards.

Details of the Recall:
According to a letter posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, GM stated that approximately 570,434 trucks may be affected by the problem. The issue stems from a potential short-circuit caused by water intrusion, leading to the inadvertent unlatching of tailgates.

Affected Models:
The recall encompasses 2020 through 2024 models of Chevy Silverados and GMC Sierras, two of GM’s popular truck lines known for their reliability and performance.

GM Trucks Recall is Affecting Consumers
GM Headquarters

Scope of the Recall:
The recall extends beyond the U.S., with approximately 249,000 vehicles sold in Canada also impacted by the issue, as per records on Canada’s motor vehicle recall database.

Previous Recall Incident:
This recent recall is not the first time General Motors has faced issues with its truck models. In a similar incident in the past, GM recalled over 2.7 million trucks, including Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras, due to a separate tailgate latch issue. The previous recall, initiated in 2019, involved concerns about the potential for the tailgate to open unexpectedly while driving, posing a safety risk to both occupants of the vehicle and other road users. This history underscores the importance of thorough quality control and continuous improvement in ensuring the safety and reliability of automotive products.

Statements and Actions:
Earlier this month, GM had announced that around 323,000 U.S. vehicles were affected by the recall. However, with the expanded scope, the total number of recalled vehicles has significantly increased.

Safety Measures and Precautions:
Despite the concerning nature of the issue, GM has reassured consumers that no reports of major injuries or property damage related to the faulty tailgates have been received. Moreover, it is estimated that only 1% of the recalled vehicles are actually affected by the defect.

Remedial Actions:
To address the issue, dealers have been instructed to replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies, aiming to rectify the potential short-circuit and prevent any further incidents.

GM Recall Conclusion:
As GM works to rectify this safety concern, it serves as a reminder of the importance of stringent quality control measures in the automotive industry. Vehicle recalls are a crucial aspect of ensuring consumer safety, and it is imperative for manufacturers to promptly address any issues that may compromise the well-being of their customers.

GM and Honda Launch Hydrogen Fuel Cell Production in the U.S.

GM and Honda have initiated U.S. production of a hydrogen fuel cell, heralding a new era for sustainable transportation and power generation. These cutting-edge fuel cells are set to power a range of vehicles and equipment, including the Honda CR-V, heavy-duty trucks, construction and mining machinery, as well as stationary power generators.

Honda CR-V Fueled by Hydrogen

The collaboration between GM and Honda has led to the establishment of a joint venture, Fuel Cell Systems Manufacturing LLC, which has commenced the production of hydrogen fuel cell modules at a facility in Brownstown, Michigan. These modules, roughly the size of a four-cylinder engine, boast a power output of 77 kilowatts (equal to 103 horsepower). The companies claim that these modules are one-third the cost of previous iterations, making hydrogen fuel cells more economically viable. They are also deemed “highly reliable” and less subject to recall or other issues.

Expanding Horizons for Hydrogen Technology

While hydrogen technology may currently occupy a niche within the automotive market, its potential for long-distance trucking, heavy-duty applications, and zero-carbon power generation is substantial. Unlike battery-electric vehicles, fuel cells offer extended range and rapid refueling, making them particularly advantageous for industries where efficiency and uptime are critical factors.

GM and Honda have initiated U.S. production of a hydrogen fuel cell, heralding a new era for sustainable transportation and power generation.

Driving Towards a Hydrogen Future

The joint venture aims to capitalize on the strengths of each company: Honda focusing on passenger vehicles and commercial applications, while GM’s Hydrotec division explores opportunities in heavy equipment and power generation. Honda plans to introduce a hydrogen-powered CR-V in March 2024, a rival to many EV-SUVs such as the Mustang Mach-E, with limited availability in California initially. Additionally, Honda and Isuzu are jointly developing a Class 8 semi-truck slated for production in 2027.

GM’s Hydrotec division, on the other hand, is poised to revolutionize various sectors by integrating fuel cells into a range of heavy equipment and power generators. Collaborations with industry leaders like Autocar, Komatsu, and Liebherr-Aerospace demonstrate the diverse applications of hydrogen fuel cells, from garbage trucks to mining machinery and even aircraft power generation.

Pioneering Progress Through Collaboration

The establishment of Fuel Cell Systems Manufacturing LLC represents the culmination of years of collaboration between GM and Honda. With nearly a century of combined experience in fuel-cell technology, including landmark achievements such as the 1966 GM Electrovan, the world’s first hydrogen-powered vehicle, and Honda’s four-decade-long commitment to fuel cells, the joint venture is poised to drive innovation and sustainability in the automotive and energy sectors.

Final Thoughts

As GM and Honda embark on this pioneering journey of hydrogen fuel cell production, they are not only shaping the future of transportation but also advancing the transition towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy landscape. With their shared expertise and commitment to innovation, the possibilities for hydrogen technology are limitless, offering a promising pathway towards a greener and more efficient future.

Exploring the history of Chevy’s LUV, a compact truck born from GM’s 1972 stake in Isuzu.

Originally conceived as a response to the escalating demand for smaller, more fuel-efficient trucks in the United States during the 1970s, the Chevy LUV, standing for “Light Utility Vehicle,” emerged as a distinctive solution. Built upon the solid foundation of the Isuzu Faster, the LUV not only met the practical needs of a compact truck but also represented a crucial chapter in Chevrolet’s automotive history. Stemming from Chevrolet’s strategic decision to tap into Isuzu’s expertise in compact truck manufacturing, the LUV symbolized a collaboration that transcended borders and contributed to the global exchange of automotive technology and design.

As consumer preferences evolved and the American automotive landscape shifted, the Chevy LUV quickly gained traction, carving out its niche as a nimble and economical truck that adeptly met the changing demands of the market. The LUV never intended to be a sports car like the Malibu or functional art like the Pegaso, it had an intended LUV-shaped hole which it perfectly fit. Its introduction marked a departure from the larger, gas-guzzling trucks of the past, offering drivers a more efficient and practical alternative without compromising on utility or performance. In an era characterized by rising fuel costs and environmental concerns, the LUV’s fuel efficiency and versatility made it an attractive option for drivers seeking a more sustainable and economical means of transportation.

Beyond its practical attributes, the Chevy LUV played a significant role in shaping Chevrolet’s brand identity during the 1970s. As a symbol of innovation and adaptability, the LUV exemplified Chevrolet’s commitment to meeting the diverse needs of consumers in an ever-changing automotive landscape. Its distinctive design and efficient engineering not only showcased Chevrolet’s ability to respond to market trends but also highlighted the brand’s dedication to delivering vehicles that combined functionality with style. From urban commuters to outdoor adventurers, the LUV appealed to a wide range of drivers, solidifying its status as a versatile and reliable option within Chevrolet’s lineup.

Technical Specifications and Features:

In 1972, the Chevy LUV debuted with a robust 1.8L four-cylinder engine under its hood, setting the stage for its reputation as a capable workhorse. This compact truck proudly boasted a remarkable 1,200-pound payload capacity, positioning itself as a reliable companion for both commercial and personal use. Its exceptional fuel efficiency, exceeding 30 mpg, proved to be a game-changer during the 1970s gas shortage, endowing the LUV with a crucial advantage over its larger counterparts. At a time when fuel conservation was paramount, the LUV’s ability to carry a substantial payload while remaining fuel-efficient made it a standout choice for drivers navigating the energy challenges of the era. This winning combination of power and efficiency not only enhanced the LUV’s appeal but also solidified its relevance in the context of shifting consumer priorities towards more economical and sustainable vehicles.

Evolution and Enhancements:

As the years progressed, the Chevy LUV underwent a series of notable transformations, reflecting both advancements in automotive technology and the evolving preferences of consumers. In 1974, the introduction of the Mikado trim elevated the LUV’s status, offering drivers a more refined and upscale option that catered to their desire for added comfort and style. Two years later, in 1976, the LUV further expanded its appeal with the introduction of an automatic transmission, providing drivers with a more convenient and effortless driving experience.

In 1979, the LUV once again raised the bar with the introduction of a 4×4 drivetrain option, enhancing its capability to tackle a variety of terrains and weather conditions with confidence. This addition not only broadened the LUV’s appeal to outdoor enthusiasts and off-road adventurers but also solidified its reputation as a versatile and adaptable truck that could meet the diverse needs of drivers across different lifestyles.

The year 1981 marked a significant milestone for the Chevy LUV, as it ushered in the arrival of the second-generation model alongside its Isuzu counterpart, the P’up. This partnership underscored the collaborative efforts between Chevrolet and Isuzu, showcasing their shared commitment to innovation and excellence in the compact truck segment. The introduction of the second-generation LUV and P’up highlighted the truck’s continued evolution and adaptability, with each enhancement aimed at meeting the ever-changing demands of consumers.

From the introduction of new trims and transmission options to the expansion of its drivetrain capabilities, the Chevy LUV’s journey was marked by a relentless pursuit of improvement and innovation. Each enhancement not only contributed to the LUV’s overall versatility but also reinforced its position as a leading contender in the competitive automotive landscape. Through its ability to adapt to the shifting preferences of drivers and embrace new technologies, the Chevy LUV demonstrated its enduring commitment to meeting the diverse needs of consumers while maintaining its status as a reliable and capable compact truck.

Transition and Discontinuation:

Despite its notable advancements and continued popularity among drivers, the Chevy LUV’s journey was relatively brief in the grand scheme of automotive history. Between 1981 and 1982, the second-generation LUV found itself sharing the stage with General Motors’ (GM) fresh entry into the compact truck scene, the S-Series. This period of coexistence ultimately led to the discontinuation of the LUV nameplate as Chevrolet shifted its focus towards the newly-introduced Chevy S-10/GMC S-15 duo.

The introduction of the S-Series marked a significant shift in Chevrolet’s approach to compact trucks, signaling a new era in the brand’s lineup. With updated designs, improved features, and a renewed emphasis on performance and versatility, the Chevy S-10 and GMC S-15 quickly became the new face of Chevrolet’s compact truck offerings. Their modern design and enhanced capabilities appealed to a broader range of consumers, effectively capturing the attention of drivers who sought a more contemporary and refined driving experience.

While the Chevy LUV had enjoyed a successful run, its discontinuation paved the way for Chevrolet to embrace a new generation of compact trucks that better aligned with the evolving preferences of drivers. The Chevy S-10/GMC S-15 duo represented a fresh start for Chevrolet, offering drivers a more refined and modern alternative to the LUV while solidifying the brand’s position in the competitive compact truck market.

Despite its relatively short tenure, the Chevy LUV left an indelible mark on Chevrolet’s automotive legacy, serving as a testament to the brand’s commitment to innovation and adaptability. While it may have been replaced by newer models, the LUV remains a cherished part of Chevrolet’s history, remembered fondly by enthusiasts and collectors alike for its enduring legacy in the world of compact trucks.

As the Chevy LUV gradually faded from the automotive scene, its Isuzu counterpart, the Isuzu P’up, stood resilient, maintaining its presence in the U.S. market until 1987. Despite the discontinuation of the LUV, the enduring relationship between Isuzu and General Motors (GM) persisted, leaving a lasting impact on subsequent models in both companies’ lineups. This enduring collaboration was evident in badge-sharing arrangements seen in various models, such as the Geo Storm/Isuzu Impulse and Chevy Spectrum/Isuzu Gemini.

The partnership between Isuzu and GM extended beyond the compact truck segment, influencing the design and engineering of a diverse range of vehicles. Through badge-sharing arrangements, both manufacturers were able to leverage each other’s strengths and resources to create vehicles that appealed to a wider audience while maximizing efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This collaborative approach not only showcased the shared automotive legacy between Isuzu and GM but also highlighted the synergies that existed between the two companies in terms of design, engineering, and manufacturing.

The influence of Isuzu’s engineering prowess and expertise could be seen in the performance and reliability of vehicles like the Isuzu Impulse, which shared its platform with the Geo Storm, and the Isuzu Gemini, which formed the basis for the Chevy Spectrum. These badge-sharing arrangements not only expanded the reach of both Isuzu and GM in the automotive market but also underscored the enduring impact of their collaborative efforts on subsequent models.

Ultimately, the partnership between Isuzu and GM left a lasting legacy in the automotive industry, showcasing the power of collaboration and shared innovation in creating vehicles that resonated with consumers and stood the test of time. From compact trucks like the Chevy LUV and Isuzu P’up to passenger cars like the Geo Storm/Isuzu Impulse and Chevy Spectrum/Isuzu Gemini, the influence of this enduring relationship continued to shape the automotive landscape long after the Chevy LUV’s departure from the scene.

Legacy and Enduring Impact Of The Chevy LUV:

In contemporary times, the Chevy LUV continues to maintain its status as a coveted gem within the automotive community, cherished by enthusiasts and builders alike for its timeless appeal. What makes this enduring fascination with the LUV particularly captivating is rooted in its lightweight design and front-engine rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout, which have become defining characteristics of the truck. These attributes not only contribute to its agility and maneuverability but also make it a popular choice for performance builds and custom projects.

The Chevy LUV’s enduring popularity is further bolstered by its versatility as a canvas for customization. Its compact size and straightforward design make it an ideal platform for enthusiasts to showcase their creativity and engineering prowess. Whether it’s swapping engines, modifying suspension components, or customizing the exterior aesthetics, the LUV offers endless possibilities for customization, allowing owners to tailor the truck to their unique preferences and specifications.

Beyond the confines of the garage, the Chevy LUV continues to make its presence known at car shows and race tracks around the world. Its distinctive design and performance capabilities make it a standout among the diverse array of vehicles on display, garnering attention and admiration from fellow enthusiasts and spectators alike. Whether competing in autocross events, drag races, or simply being showcased alongside other classic and vintage vehicles, the LUV’s presence serves as a testament to its enduring legacy within the tapestry of Chevy truck history.

The Chevy LUV’s journey is a narrative of innovation, customization, and unwavering admiration from those who continue to appreciate its unique qualities. From its humble beginnings as a practical and fuel-efficient compact truck to its current status as a beloved icon within the automotive community, the LUV has left an indelible mark on Chevy truck history. Its enduring appeal and continued presence in contemporary automotive culture stand as a testament to its timeless design, performance capabilities, and the passion of those who continue to keep its legacy alive.

Exploring the Distinctions Between LS and Vortec Engines

Throughout its history, General Motors has introduced a variety of eight-cylinder engine designs, from the classic inline “Straight-8” to the contemporary LT1 V8. Among them, the small-block LS engines have gained widespread acclaim as some of GM’s most beloved V8 powerplants. However, where does the Vortec engine stand in GM’s V8 lineup?

GM predominantly employed the LS engine-coded V8s in its sportscar range, while Vortec engines found their niche in pickup trucks and SUVs. Although LS and Vortec engines exhibit numerous similarities, they also boast notable differences. In fact, MotorTrend acknowledges these similarities to the extent of using the LS term interchangeably when referencing either engine.

Vortec engines typically have a smaller displacement compared to LS variants, with their cast iron blocks setting them apart from the aluminum blocks of the LS. Nevertheless, exceptions to this trend exist. Let’s delve into the disparities and, perhaps, uncover some parallels between LS and Vortec engines.

General Motors LS Engine Overview

General Motors initiated the development of its Gen-III Small-Block engine in the early 1990s to replace the popular Gen-II V8. Chevrolet introduced the new 5.7-liter V8 engine, labeled LS1, in the all-new C5 Corvette in 1997.

The LS1 boasted an aluminum block and cylinder heads, incorporating steel or cast iron inserts for areas prone to high wear, such as valve guides and cylinder walls. Beyond weight reduction, the most significant departure from its predecessor lay in the firing order. The LS1 adopted a 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3 firing order, distinct from the 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 firing order of the Gen-II V8.

The horsepower output of the LS lineup ranged from 345 in the 1997 5.7-liter LS1 Corvette to 638 in the 6.2-liter LS9-powered ZR1 Corvettes manufactured from 2009 to 2013. The ZR1 LS9 engine boasted lightweight titanium connecting rods and a “2.3L Roots-style supercharger,” along with a 0.5-liter displacement increase compared to the original LS1’s 5.7 liters.

Understanding the Vortec Small-Block V8

The Chevy Avalanche 1500 came equipped with a 5.3L Vortec V8

The Vortec name gained prominence with the 4.3-liter V6 utilized in GM’s smaller pickup and SUV lineup. The success of Vortec technology prompted its extension to cast iron-blocked V8s intended for larger pickups, SUVs, and some luxury sports cars. While the 5.7-liter LS remains popular, Vortec V8s are available in 5.3-, 6.0-, and 8.1-liter versions.

GM developed the LS V8 based on existing Vortec intake airflow technology and subsequently leveraged the LS design to produce the Gen-III Vortec V8. Consequently, the two engine types share more similarities than differences. Despite being cast from different materials, both engine blocks share identical mold designs.

This shared foundation facilitates engine swaps, as LS and Vortec blocks boast similar accessory mounting bosses. Furthermore, the abundance of cast iron Vortec V8s in scrapyards, coupled with their enhanced strength compared to aluminum LS engines, renders them highly sought after by high-performance engine builders.

Chevrolet entered the realm of personal luxury cars with the introduction of the Monte Carlo in 1970. Sharing its platform with the Pontiac Grand Prix and incorporating elements of the mid-size Chevy Chevelle, it boasted one of the lengthiest hoods to emerge from Detroit in 1970-72. Over the years, sales steadily climbed, peaking at 400,000 units annually by 1977. This particular inaugural Monte Carlo, hailing from Orr’s Island, Maine, has been sitting for quite some time but received previous upgrades, including a switch to a 383 cubic inch V8, showcasing its age through layers of dust.

The Monte Carlo, deriving its name from the city in Monaco, emerged onto the automotive scene as an exclusive 2-door hardtop model. The inception of this concept began gathering momentum in 1968, setting the stage for its anticipated debut in the Fall of 1969. However, the early sales trajectory encountered obstacles precipitated by a General Motors (GM) labor strike, resulting in a unique conundrum of heightened demand juxtaposed with a diminished supply in the early months of 1970.

Within its standard configuration, the Monte Carlo featured a robust 350 cubic inch V8 engine, contributing to its performance prowess. Notably, the model faced a temporary evolution during the years 1970 and 1971 with the introduction of the SS 454 version, an embodiment of enhanced power and sportiness. Regrettably, this variant ceased to exist with the comprehensive redesign undertaken in 1973, marking a shift in the Monte Carlo’s lineup dynamics.

Claimed to be a one-owner vehicle with a history of garage storage, this Chevy underwent paint and vinyl top restoration in the 1990s but has largely remained inactive since. The engine was replaced, now equipped with headers and dual exhaust, while the original 350 engine is included with the car. Paired with a TH-350 automatic transmission, the Monte, showcased in dim garage photos, seems non-operational.

The finder posted the Monte on Facebook and is asking $10,000. We anticipate this will be a quick sell. With an odometer reading of just 68,000 miles, the engine swap suggests a pursuit of enhanced power rather than addressing flaws in the original engine. However, the lack of information leaves uncertainty regarding the steps needed to revive the car and whether years of inactivity have affected its body and paint.

Unprecedented Speed: The Worlds Fastest Corvette Record-Breaking 8.6 Second Journey Down the Drag Strip

For the second time, this C8 can wear the crown of Worlds Fastest Corvette.

The C8 Chevrolet Corvette, celebrated for its exceptional performance, recently achieved a remarkable feat on the drag strip, clocking an astounding quarter-mile time of 8.644 seconds at a speed of 170.71 mph. We’re not talking about your run-of-the-mill Grand Am, or some pumped up Mustang EV, we’re talking power! Good, old fashioned, power. This record-setting run underscores the impressive capabilities of the C8, particularly when in the hands of aftermarket specialists. The vehicle in question, a 2020 model, stands out as the first of the C8 generation to reach the 1,000-horsepower mark and break into the coveted 9-second category.

Extreme Turbo Systems (ETS), the ingenious minds behind this powerhouse, have transformed the Corvette into a high-performance drag racing machine. The modifications are extensive, featuring a pair of turbochargers, a nitrous system, Mahle Motorsport pistons, Carillo connecting rods, ARP head and main studs, and a secondary fuel system with C85 in the tank. The integration of a MoTeC ECU plays a pivotal role in orchestrating this symphony of power.

The MoTeC ECU not only manages the complex array of aftermarket upgrades but also empowers the vehicle to deliver the exceptional performance witnessed on the strip. Notable features include the ability to launch at 2,800 RPM with anti-lag and between five and six pounds of boost, a significant departure from the factory launch control’s limitations at 3,500 RPM. Additionally, the ECU affords ETS the strategic control to ramp up boost incrementally as the car accelerates down the track.

In a conversation with Motortrend, Zack Morgan, the race team manager for ETS, shed light on the intricate details of their racing strategy. Morgan highlighted the utilization of 17 psi in the first gear, a boost increase to 26 psi upon shifting into second, and a gradual addition in the third gear. However, the team faces a unique challenge during the fifth-gear shift, requiring a reduction in power to prevent overwhelming the clutch.

Interestingly, Morgan identifies a particular component in the transmission as the unsung hero of the setup – a pressure box that increases line pressure by 10-15%. This enhancement proves instrumental in ensuring optimal power delivery to the rear wheels, solidifying the transmission as a key player in the overall performance of the vehicle.

Despite the cutting-edge technology at play, Morgan hints at untapped potential, noting that the team currently operates within certain RPM constraints due to limited access to the transmission control module’s software. This limitation forces them to maximize power output below 6,500 rpm. However, the impressive quarter-mile run suggests that the existing setup is working exceptionally well.

As the team continues to push the boundaries of performance, there is anticipation regarding future tuning possibilities. The unexplored realms of the transmission control module’s software could potentially unlock further speed and efficiency, hinting at a future where this already groundbreaking Corvette becomes even faster on the drag strip. But, how long can this car hold the title of the worlds fastest Corvette is to be seen.

Shifts in Super Bowl Traditions: Every Major US Automaker Stops Ads as Electric Vehicles Steal The Podium

None of America’s four largest car manufacturers—Ford, Toyota, GM, and Stellantis—will showcase national ads for the first time in 23 years as they all pull out of Superbowl LVIII. Instead, foreign-owned companies like Kia and Volkswagen are filling the gap, attributing the absence of the Big Four to challenges in the U.S. automotive market. Sluggish consumer demand and high interest rates are pressuring these manufacturers to reduce ad spending.

Superbowl Ads In 2023 Included RAMs “Premature Electrification” an attempt to make light of fears about the emerging EV market.

Car commercials during the Super Bowl have been a tradition, with Stellantis being absent only twice in the past 15 years. However, this year marks the first time since 2001 that none of the major American automakers are willing to pay the hefty $7 million fee for a 30-second spot, as reported by AdAge.

Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, mentioned a focus on preserving business fundamentals amidst the challenging U.S. auto market as the reason for their absence. Toyota, on the other hand, plans to “activate on the ground” with an engaging experience around the game, highlighting its status as the official automotive sponsor of the NFL. GM confirmed that none of its brands would advertise during the Super Bowl, emphasizing alignment with business priorities in media strategies. Ford did not provide immediate comments on the matter.

The auto industry, recovering from a tough 2023, faced a significant setback in its pursuit of Tesla’s dominance. Legacy manufacturers collectively invested approximately $100 billion in mass-market electric vehicle (EV) production by November. However, sales fell short of projections, customers reported reliability issues, and most EV models remained too expensive for the average consumer, despite tax credits.

Although none of the contacted companies explicitly cited the challenging 2023 EV market for the reason they are out of Superbowl ads, their earnings reflect the strain. Ford estimated a $4.5 billion cost for its EV division in 2023, and GM revised its EV production target downward, citing a slowing market. Even Tesla, the industry leader, reported its first quarterly loss since 2020 in the fall of 2023, facing a “moderate low-growth period.”

The broader industry outlook, marked by a 12% rise in American total auto sales in the previous year but still below pre-pandemic levels, further complicates the situation. Cooling consumer demand and manufacturing disruptions, including strikes and supply chain issues, paint a cloudy picture for the domestic automotive industry in 2024.

Out Of Superbowl Yet In With EV Strangleholds

Despite these challenges, this year’s Super Bowl will spotlight EVs, with Kia promoting its newly released EV9 SUV, and Volkswagen returning to Super Bowl ads after a decade, celebrating its 75th year of business in the U.S. Both companies have aggressively pushed their EV offerings, reporting over 60% annual sales growth as of October. However, they still trail behind Tesla, commanding 56.5% of the new EV market.

Beyond economic conditions, the timing might play a role in the Big Four’s absence, as Toyota, the NFL’s exclusive automotive partner, lacks major new product releases coinciding with the February 11 Super Bowl date. Morningstar analyst David Whiston notes that these ads are expensive, and Toyota might not have a vehicle needing such exposure.
