There are so many practical and efficient small pickup trucks on the market these days, such as the Ford Maverick. Yet, there stands the Dodge Ram SRT-10, a remnant from the long lost era where raw power and amazing street presence reigned supreme. This behemoth of a muscle truck represents a time that defied the norms of sensibility in pickup design; a true antithesis to the values upheld by today’s environmentally conscious. With its V10 engine striped from beneath the hood of the Dodge Viper, the Ram SRT-10 wasn’t about subtlety or fuel efficiency—it was about making a statement loud and clear, both in sound and performance.

I find myself longing for the golden days of street trucks like the Ram SRT-10, Ford Lightning, and their ilk. I believe this is a sentiment shared by many. These trucks were engineered not just for utility but for unapologetic speed and street credibility. They carved a niche into the automotive world, and by combining the utilitarian charm of a pickup with the thrill of a sports car, built something great. Something memorable. Despite their impractical nature for the modern eco-friendly lineups, their appeal lingers, fueled by nostalgia and a genuine appreciation for their unique place in truck history. We now have something new to thank; the passage of time and the effects of depreciation. These are leading enthusiasts to find that acquiring a Ram SRT-10 today can be as attainable as purchasing a new, more modest (and less fun) pickup.

Key Takeaways

  • The Dodge Ram SRT-10 stands in bold opposition to contemporary small, efficient pickups.
  • Street trucks like the Ram SRT-10 blend utility with the exhilaration of performance driving.
  • Depreciation has made the once cost-prohibitive muscle trucks more accessible.

Exploring the Dodge Ram SRT-10

The powerplant at the heart of the Dodge Ram SRT-10 contains a formidable 8.3-liter V10 engine – happily donated from the Dodge Viper. This pickup truck hosts only a half-ton payload, but 500hp and 525-lb-ft of torque is more than enough to make it a force to be reckoned with both on the highway and drag strip.

Performance Specifications:

  • Engine: 8.3-liter V10 (Viper Engine)
  • Horsepower: 500 hp
  • Torque: 525 lb-ft
  • Transmission: Six-speed manual (Tremec T-56)
  • Drive: Rear wheels

Dodge’s engineers meticulously modified the Viper’s beastly engine, fitting it into the Ram’s frame with changes to the exhaust manifolds, oil pan, and other essential components. They achieved all of this without compromising the engine’s integrity. The regular cab models feature a robust six-speed manual transmission, delivering you solidly into your seat-back and creating a driving experience that’s increasingly rare in modern pickups.

Chassis and Driving Dynamics:

  • Cab: Regular cab short bed (Quad cab version available)
  • Acceleration: 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds
  • Top Speed: 154 mph (Fastest stock mass-produced pickup truck)
  • Wheels: 22-inch Pirellis

Despite its hefty size and muscle, drivers will find both the steering and the clutch surprisingly manageable; the truck offers a precision and ease that belies its immense power and dimensions. I found this to be a relief, as many modern clutches are stiff and forced. It’s truly a performance-focused pickup, capable of making a 13.6-second quarter-mile.

Distinctive Features:

  • Start: Red starter button
  • Gear Shift: Viper shift knob
  • Trim: Sportier, muscle-bound design

While an automatic, quad cab variant of this model was later released, purists (and need-for-speed gearheads like me) often prefer the visceral experience offered by the regular cab version with a manual gearbox. This truck has an undeniable charm — an ode to the audacious spirit of its time — and remains within reach for those looking to own a slice of automotive history or just looking to roast some rubber on a Saturday.

How Much Are We Talking?

If you’re in the market for a performance-oriented pickup truck, by now you’re probably familiar with the Dodge Ram SRT-10, we’ve obsessed over it the last few paragraphs. This muscular vehicle, powered by the same engine as a Dodge Viper, can often be found on the pre-owned market for prices that rival those of a new 2024 Ford Maverick XLT, or the XLT Hybrid (and no one wants one of those). For example, a well-maintained Ram SRT-10 with a history of regular brake services and a solid underbody fetched $24,500 at a recent Bring A Trailer auction. This specific truck displayed a few cosmetic blemishes, maintaining a good overall condition despite having over 100,000 miles on the odometer.

A review of recent sales shows various prices reflecting the vehicle’s condition, mileage, and history:

Vehicle DetailsSale PriceAuction SiteMileageNotes
Black Ram SRT-10, Regular Cab$23,500Bring A Trailer73,000Minor Carfax note
2004 Ram SRT-10$28,351Hemmings Auctions67,374Clean Carfax, lower mileage

At another Bring A Trailer event, a regular cab Ram SRT-10 went under the hammer for just $23,500 despite having a varied registration history across several states and Canadian provinces. Still, the price remained attractive partially due to a slight Carfax mishap — a mismatch in the mileage data due to a conversion error between miles and kilometers. Their loss, not the buyers fault that Carfax can’t do math.

Dodge Ram SRT-10 with hood up

For those less inclined towards black, patience can pay off. Occasional listings show up for Ram SRT-10s in other hues, commanding prices within the reach of a mid-range new pickup, demonstrating auctions like Mecum to occasionally feature comparable deals.

It’s clear that the Ram SRT-10 can occasionally be found for a steal at various auctions, presenting an appealing alternative to buying new for those who appreciate low mileage, value, and power in their trucks. So please don’t buy a hybrid. Please.

Potential Issues with the Ram SRT-10

The Ram SRT-10 boasts notable performance and a robust design, but like all vehicles, it has a few areas where issues may arise. Common concerns for these trucks include:

  • Fuel Efficiency: Owners should expect lower gas mileage, sometimes reaching as little as eight miles per gallon.
  • Maintenance Costs: Generally, the Ram SRT-10 does not require costly upkeep.
  • Harmonic Balancers: Early on, some vehicles had issues with harmonic balancers, but this is likely resolved in units that have seen regular use.
  • Oil Cooler Lines: With time, the oil cooler lines may begin to leak. However, replacements are readily available for a reasonable cost.
  • Transmission: Both manual and automatic gearboxes are present in these models. The manual version offers a six-speed gearbox, while the automatic is a four-speed.
  • Additional Features: It’s equipped with power steering, air conditioning, and a CD player. Standard suspension system ensures a stable ride.

While navigating potential maintenance, the predominantly manual transmission provides an engaging driving experience for enthusiasts.

Evaluating the Purchase of a Dodge Ram SRT-10

The Dodge Ram SRT-10 is not a one-size-fits-all type of vehicle. It’s a niche powerhouse for those who have a penchant for high performance and aren’t deterred by its thirst for fuel. Housing an 8.3-liter V10 engine, similar to one you’d find in a Dodge Viper, this truck offers a rare combination of speed and capability.

Key Considerations:

  • Power and Performance: Expect a robust driving experience with a truck that can sprint with the best of sports cars.
  • Fuel Economy: It’s not the choice for the frugal-minded. Its large displacement engine will require frequent fuel stops.
  • Potential Value: In the used car market, it holds appeal for collectors or automotive enthusiasts looking for a unique ride with muscle car DNA.
  • Utility: While not primarily meant for it, the truck can still manage to haul and tow to a reasonable extent given its build.

Prospective buyers should weigh the costs of ownership, like fuel and maintenance, against the sheer driving pleasure and uniqueness that come with a truck of this calibre. The Dodge Ram SRT-10 is, indeed, a statement piece in an automobile collection, promising a blend of excitement and practicality for the right owner.

Muscle Car Treasure Trove in Michigan

Tucked away in the Great Lakes State, a collection of Chrysler’s legendary Mopar vehicles awaits restoration, showcasing relics from the unprecedented muscle car period. Enthusiasts and restorers alike prize such finds, as they bring to life the fierce competition and innovation of those times.

1970 Dodge Challenger T/A

Notably in the collection is the ’70 Challenger T/A, a model birthed from the competitive spirit of SCCA Trans-Am racing. Chrysler produced this model to comply with the league’s rules, which entailed crafting a street-legal car available in sufficient quantity. Only 2,399 of these were manufactured, making them a coveted item for collectors. Among them, a very special Challenger T/A stands out, sporting the Lemon Twist paint with a contrasting tan interior. Its heart, a 340 cubic-inch V8, is enhanced by triple two-barrel carbs and feeds a four-speed manual transmission. Remarkably, this particular car is one from just a batch of 989. Although in a dilapidated state, the dedicated owner has spent two decades amassing parts for its imminent revival.

Key Challenger T/A Specs:

  • Engine: 340 cubic-inch V8
  • Carburetors: Triple two-barrel
  • Horsepower: 290
  • Production: 2,399 units (989 with four-speed manual)
  • Restoration: In progress

1969 Plymouth GTX

Also sheltered within the same confines is a ’69 GTX, boasting its authentic “Coyote Duster” 440 cubic-inch V8. Though it doesn’t possess the prestigious HEMI, its presence is significant in a landscape where many have succumbed to neglect. This model, still in an operational state, serves as a testament to the endurance of muscle car architecture.

1970 Plymouth Road Runner

Bringing more variety to this secretive collection is the ’70 Road Runner, equipped with a powerful 390-horsepower, six-barrel engine. It holds its place in muscle car royalty, with only 36,861 units sold—a mere 1,815 of which featured the robust six-barrel option. Among hardtop models, just 651 were manufactured, marking it as an exemplar of this pinnacle era.

Road Runner Comparative Statistics:

  • Total Production: 36,861 units
  • Six-Barrel Models: 1,815 units
  • Two-Door Hardtops: 651 units

1970 Plymouth Barracuda Convertible

Finally, the assemblage includes an unusual 1970 Barracuda convertible. This variant is not only a rarity among its contemporaries due to its drop-top design—one of only 2,501 produced—but it also sports the less sought-after slant-six engine. The Barracuda is further distinguished by a production number of only 238 convertibles with this engine, underscoring its uniqueness.

The compilation of Mopar muscle cars, uncovered in Michigan, constitutes an invaluable connection to a time when horsepower and fast quarters ruled the roads. The ’70 Challenger T/A, ’69 GTX, ’70 Road Runner, and the ’70 Barracuda each represent a slice of automotive history, with restoration projects underscoring their enduring legacy. Their scarcity and condition pose not just a challenge, but a passionate project for the owner, who aims to breathe new life into these timeless machines.

Get Ready to Shift into High Gear! Every Manual Transmission Car Ranked.

Manual transmissions have been around for a long time, but their popularity has declined over the years. Once the norm, they are now considered a luxury or convenience option. However, there are still some manual transmissions available in the US market, and today we’re going to take a look at them.

In this article, the manuals will be lined up by the number of gears they have. The focus will be on traditional three-pedal manuals, with no automated or CVT transmissions included. With the maximum number of gears for manuals being seven, we’ll explore what’s left of the market. So, let’s get started and see what’s out there!

Key Takeaways

  • The popularity of manual transmissions has declined over the years, with automatics becoming the norm.
  • Today, we’ll be looking at the remaining manual transmissions available in the US market, sorted by the number of gears they have.
  • We’ll only be focusing on traditional three-pedal manuals, with no automated or CVT transmissions included.

Five Speeds

Somber news for manual transmission enthusiasts! The Nissan Versa and Mitsubishi Mirage were the only two cars in the United States market that offered a five-speed manual gearbox in 2023. However, the Mirage is no longer available with a manual transmission for 2024. Although Car and Driver still lists the Mirage with a manual option, recent marketing materials and forum posts suggest that the manual transmission option is no longer available.

The Nissan Versa, on the other hand, still offers a five-speed manual gearbox, the Nissan RS5F91R, since 2019. This budget-friendly car is perfect for those who enjoy a more engaging driving experience. Unfortunately, the Subaru Impreza’s five-speed manual gearbox was also dropped for the 2024 model year.

Manual transmission enthusiasts can still enjoy the thrill of driving with the Nissan Versa’s five-speed manual gearbox. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the Mirage and Impreza are no longer available with manual transmission options.

Six Speeds

Exciting news for manual transmission enthusiasts, as the majority of new manuals for sale feature six-speed gearboxes. This is especially true for performance models, with few budget options available.

American automakers offer a range of six-speed options. The Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing, CT5-V Blackwing, and Chevrolet Camaro all feature six speeds. However, Dodge is not producing any manuals for the 2024 model year. The Ford Mustang, Jeep Gladiator, and Jeep Wrangler round out the big three offerings with their six-speed gearboxes.

a black cadillac on the road

Asian automakers also offer a variety of six-speed options. Acura leads the way with the Integra Type S, while Honda offers the six-speed Civic in certain trims, as well as the Civic Si and Type-R. The Hyundai Elantra N and Kia Forte GT also feature six-speed boxes. The Mazda 3 and MX-5 Miata, Nissan Z, Subaru BRZ and WRX, and Toyota GR Corolla, GR86, Supra, and Tacoma all offer six gears as well.

German automakers also have their fair share of six-speed options. The BMW M2, M3, and M4 all feature six-speed gearboxes, as does the Z4. The Porsche 718 also offers a six-speed option. For more humble transportation, the Volkswagen Jetta, Golf GTI, and Golf R all have six-speed boxes.

Finally, the last stick-shift Lotus ever, the Emira, offers six glorious gears. The Mini Cooper also features a six-speed gearbox. Unfortunately, the Subaru Crosstrek lost its six-speed box for the 2024 model year.

Overall, the variety of six-speed options available from a range of automakers offers exciting possibilities for manual transmission enthusiasts.

Seven Speeds

Automakers have been experimenting with seven-speed manuals, despite the unconventional H-pattern it requires to fit all the gears in. Porsche has been a notable player in this field, offering a seven-speed manual option for the 911. Although it may seem unusual, the shifter has not affected the vehicle’s sales.

Another surprising inclusion in the seven-speed manual club is the Ford Bronco. Although some refer to it as a “6+1” transmission due to its “crawler” gear, it actually has seven forward speeds. This unique feature adds to the off-road capabilities of the Bronco and makes it a desirable option for adventurous drivers.

The Bronco’s interior design is also noteworthy, with a rugged and functional aesthetic that complements its off-road capabilities.

Diversity and Options

The diversity of transmission options in today’s automotive market is impressive, however, manual gearbox options are still limited. Despite this, there are still plenty of good manual options available. By voting with their dollars and taking these cars for a test drive, consumers can show automakers that the demand for manual gearboxes is still strong. The automakers featured in the image credits, including Porsche, Nissan, Ford, Hyundai, and Cadillac, offer some of the best manual options on the market. It’s time to concentrate on the pleasure of driving with a manual gearbox and keep this option alive.

The automotive world is abuzz with anticipation as Lincoln unveils the refreshed 2025 Lincoln Aviator, poised to redefine luxury in the SUV segment. Building upon its shared platform with the Ford Explorer, the Aviator emerges with a distinct identity, blending opulence with technological innovation.

2025 Lincoln Aviator

A striking transformation awaits admirers of the Aviator, notably in its exterior design. The front end receives a bold makeover, characterized by a larger grille seamlessly connected to headlights at the upper corners. Vertical corner vents lend a modern flair to the redesigned fascia, signaling a departure from its predecessor’s aesthetics. Inside, the Aviator promises a heightened sense of luxury, boasting larger digital screens for both driver and front-seat passenger. The interior ambiance is further elevated with sophisticated color combinations like Light Space Gray, Harvest Bronze, and Hot Chocolate.

Before delving deeper into the transformative features of the 2025 Lincoln Aviator, it’s worth reflecting on the esteemed lineage from which it descends. The Aviator nameplate first made its debut in the early 2000s as a mid-size luxury SUV, capturing the hearts of discerning drivers with its blend of elegance and performance. Fast forward to the present, and the Aviator continues to uphold its legacy while embracing the latest advancements in automotive technology and design. With each iteration, Lincoln has refined and reimagined the Aviator, ensuring it remains at the forefront of luxury SUV innovation. Now, as the automotive landscape evolves, the 2025 Aviator emerges as a testament to Lincoln’s commitment to pushing boundaries and setting new standards of excellence in the luxury SUV segment.

Technology

However, the true essence of the 2025 Aviator lies in its technological advancements. The introduction of the Lincoln Digital Experience revolutionizes the driving experience, seamlessly integrating Google and Amazon functionality into the infotainment system. With native access to popular apps like Spotify, Google Maps, and YouTube, drivers can navigate, entertain, and stay connected with unprecedented ease. Voice commands through Google Assistant or Alexa offer intuitive control, complemented by the BlueCruise hands-free driving system and Lincoln Co-Pilot 360’s comprehensive suite of standard driver assists.

Beyond its technological prowess, the 2025 Aviator invites personalization with a range of options to suit individual tastes. Its options stand far above your run of the mill compact SUV and many in your full sized marketplace. From black appearance packages to a selection of wheel choices, owners can tailor their Aviator to reflect their unique style. For the discerning few, the Lincoln Black Label Invitation theme offers exclusive interior details, elevating the luxury quotient to new heights.

Heidi Shaffer, Director at Lincoln, emphasizes the Aviator’s role in creating a luxurious sanctuary on the road: “With advanced, connected features like the Lincoln Digital Experience and BlueCruise hands-free driving technology, we are creating a new, digital sanctuary on the road.”

Enthusiasts eager to experience the 2025 Aviator firsthand can expect its arrival later this year. Pricing starts at $58,495 for the base Premiere trim, reflecting a year-over-year increase indicative of its enhanced features and technology. The mid-level Reserve and range-topping Black Label trims offer further refinement and customization options, with fully optioned models nearing the $100,000 mark. As the automotive landscape evolves, the 2025 Aviator stands poised to redefine luxury and sophistication in the SUV segment.

The Odd Story of a Perfectly Preserved 2002 Ford Focus LX with Just 117 Miles in a Small Montana Town

The Ford Focus, a long-gone favorite in the United States, is now on the brink of disappearing completely. However, a unique opportunity presents itself to own a brand-new, never-registered 2002 Ford Focus model with a mere 117 miles on the odometer. Yet, it comes with a caveat – it might sport one of Ford’s least favored engines.

Currently available for purchase at Centsible Auto Sales in Kalispell, Montana, this gem was once part of the inventory at the now-defunct Rygg Ford dealership. While the circumstances leading to Rygg Ford’s closure remain undocumented online, a 2012 Flickr photoshoot of the dealership’s abandoned premises hints at an unsold inventory, with many vehicles vandalized.

This 2002 Ford Focus LX is a time capsule, maintaining showroom condition from its paint to the hubcaps, seats, and Monroney sticker. With only a handful of miles under its belt, the cloth seats remain untouched by numerous occupants, having never been registered to a private owner. This five-speed manual transmission model represents a bygone era of automotive design and driving experience.

However, the allure is tempered by the inclusion of the infamous 2.0-liter Split Port Induction engine. Known for its propensity for severe vibration, sludge accumulation, and valve seat issues over time, it detracts from the excitement of acquiring such a meticulously preserved vehicle from 2002.

Priced at $20,000, a significant jump from its original MSRP over two decades ago, the value proposition of this 2002 Ford Focus LX with only 117 miles on the clock may raise eyebrows among potential buyers. While enthusiasts well-versed with the peculiarities of these engines or captivated by the timeless appeal of the Focus body style might find it a compelling addition to their collection, others might hesitate due to the uncertain reliability and maintenance costs associated with its aging powertrain.

For those seeking a practical daily driver, the landscape of modern automotive offerings has evolved considerably since 2002. Vehicles like the 2024 Toyota Corolla, known for its reliability, fuel efficiency, and modern amenities, present themselves as formidable alternatives to the vintage allure of the Ford Focus. Similarly, the Honda Civic, renowned for its blend of performance, comfort, and resale value, offers a compelling proposition for buyers in search of a reliable and versatile compact sedan.

In this context, while the 2002 Ford Focus LX may hold nostalgic appeal and rarity for certain buyers, its hefty price tag and potential maintenance concerns may prompt others to explore more contemporary options in the compact sedan market.

The 2002 Ford Focus LX with only 117 miles presents a rare opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts, despite its infamous engine issues. Yet, its inflated price tag and availability of modern alternatives may deter the average buyer from indulging in this automotive time capsule.

Electric Cars Plummet In Value While Trucks And Hybrids Demonstrate Remarkable Resilience

In a groundbreaking study conducted by iSeeCars, the depreciation rates of over 1.1 million vehicles sold between November 2022 and October 2023 were analyzed, revealing significant insights into the automotive market’s resale value landscape. The study delves into how various vehicle segments, including electric cars, trucks, hybrids, and SUVs, hold their value over a five-year period. We brake down the cars with best resale value from All-Electrics like the Mustang EV to Luxury Sedans like Mercedes.

Electric Vehicles: The Worst Performers

Electric vehicles, known for their eco-friendly nature, face a significant challenge when it comes to holding their value over time. The study reveals that electric vehicles have the highest depreciation rate among all vehicle segments, standing at a staggering 49.1% over five years. This rate is more than 10 percentage points higher than the average depreciation rate for vehicles in general. This stark difference highlights a major issue for electric vehicle owners, as it suggests that their investment in environmentally friendly transportation may not pay off financially in the long run. Several factors contribute to this trend, including concerns about the cost of replacing batteries, the limited availability of charging infrastructure, and ongoing advancements in electric vehicle technology. As the automotive industry continues to transition towards electric vehicles, addressing these challenges is crucial for building consumer confidence and ensuring the sustained growth of the electric vehicle market.

Electric Vehicles Such As Tesla Have Seen The Highest Depreciation

Trucks and Hybrids: Resilient Performers

In contrast to electric vehicles, trucks and hybrids shine as beacons of resilience in the automotive resale landscape. Trucks, renowned for their versatility and utility, boast an impressive depreciation rate of only 35% over five years. Some of the top trucks, like the Toyota Tacoma, lost about 20%. Similarly, hybrids, known for their fuel efficiency and eco-conscious design, demonstrate remarkable value retention, with a depreciation rate of around 37%. This standout performance underscores the enduring popularity and demand for these vehicle types in the used car market. It is also a reason why pickups tend to be named cars with best resale year after year. Consumers continue to value trucks for their rugged reliability and capability, making them sought-after options for a wide range of tasks, from daily commuting to hauling heavy loads. Similarly, hybrids offer a compelling blend of fuel efficiency and environmental consciousness, appealing to drivers who prioritize sustainability without sacrificing performance. As the automotive industry evolves, trucks and hybrids stand as pillars of stability in an ever-changing market, offering reassurance to owners and investors alike.

Sports Cars, Small SUVs, and Economy Cars Shine

However, perhaps not surprising, the big winner in all of this turned out to be the Porsche 911. Both the 911 and the 718 Cayman proved to weather depreciation the best. The 911 only dipping a mere 9% topping our list. In fact, several segments within the automotive market showcase exceptional value retention, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the fluctuating landscape of vehicle depreciation. Sports cars, small SUVs, and economy cars stand out for their resilience in holding their value over time. Iconic models like the Porsche 911, Jeep Wrangler, and Honda Civic lead the charge, embodying the enduring appeal of performance-oriented vehicles and fuel-efficient models among consumers. This trend speaks to the unwavering demand for vehicles that strike a balance between exhilarating driving experiences and practicality, catering to diverse consumer preferences and driving habits. As these models continue to command attention in the used car market, they reinforce the notion that timeless design, exceptional performance, and fuel efficiency remain key considerations for savvy car buyers seeking long-term value and satisfaction.

Luxury SUVs and Sedans: Value Erosion

On the flip side, luxury SUVs and sedans face notable challenges in maintaining their value over time, showcasing substantial value erosion compared to the industry average. Prestigious models such as the Maserati Quattroporte and BMW 7 series bear the brunt of this trend, experiencing depreciation rates that surpass the industry average. Some loosing almost half thier value. Despite their opulent features and prestigious branding, these luxury vehicles struggle to preserve their space in the used car market, highlighting the inherent risks associated with high-end, non-sport automotive investments. As consumers weigh their options, the allure of luxury may be tempered by the reality of significant depreciation, prompting a shift in purchasing priorities towards vehicles that offer a more favorable balance of performance, reliability, and long-term value retention.

Pandemic’s Impact:

The pandemic-induced disruption in new car production and constrained used car supply has had a profound impact on the automotive market. While all cars are holding their value better in 2023 compared to 2019, the average 5-year depreciation has decreased to 38.8%. However, the disparity between vehicle segments remains evident, with electric vehicles bearing the brunt of depreciation.

Expert Insights On Cars With Best Resale Value:

Karl Brauer, the executive analyst at iSeeCars, underscores a notable trend in the automotive market: while the value retention of used cars has improved overall compared to five years ago, disparities exist among different segments. In particular, Brauer points out that trucks and hybrids emerge as standout performers in terms of retaining their value over time. These segments exhibit robust resilience in the face of depreciation, reflecting the enduring popularity and demand for such vehicles among consumers. However, Brauer highlights a contrasting scenario for electric vehicles, noting a significant lag in their value retention compared to trucks and hybrids. This discrepancy underscores the challenges facing electric vehicles in the used car market, signaling a need for deeper analysis and understanding of the factors influencing their depreciation dynamics. As consumers navigate their vehicle purchase decisions, Brauer’s insights provide valuable guidance for identifying segments that offer optimal value retention, ultimately empowering buyers to make informed choices aligned with their preferences and budgetary considerations.

TL;DR What Are The Cars With Best Resale Value?

The study’s findings provide valuable insights into the dynamic nature of the automotive market and the myriad factors that shape vehicle resale value. The iSeeCars study, analyzing over 1.1 million vehicles sold from November 2022 to October 2023, provides insights into the automotive market’s dynamics and factors influencing resale value. It reveals electric vehicles as the worst-performing segment, depreciating by 49.1% over five years, while trucks and hybrids show resilience with depreciation rates of 35% and 37%, respectively.

As consumers, we navigate the complex landscape of vehicle purchase decisions, gaining a nuanced understanding of the depreciation dynamics across different segments. This becomes essential. By comprehending how various factors such as vehicle type, brand reputation, market demand, and technological advancements influence resale value, consumers can make informed choices that align with their preferences and budgetary considerations. Armed with this knowledge, you as a car buyers can optimize your long-term ownership costs and maximize the value proposition of the investment, ensuring a satisfying and financially prudent automotive ownership experience.

Methodology:

iSeeCars meticulously analyzed over 1.1 million used cars from model year 2018, filtering out heavy-duty trucks and vans, discontinued models, and low-volume vehicles. The study employed inflation-adjusted MSRPs from 2018 to 2023 to ascertain the vehicles’ depreciation rates accurately, providing invaluable insights into the automotive resale value landscape.

Detached Trim Woes: Ford Recalls in 2024 Surge as 1.8 Million Explorers Face Safety Concerns

As of January 24, Ford recalls in 2024 are already making strides toward surpassing its total count from the previous year, and given that Ford was the most-recalled automaker in 2023 by a considerable margin, this is a notable development. In 2023, Ford issued a staggering 58 recalls, covering 6.1 million Blue Oval vehicles in the U.S. Now, just a few weeks into the new year, 1.8 million Ford Explorers in the States find themselves subject to recall due to trim pieces that could potentially detach while driving. This issue isn’t confined to the U.S. alone; globally, it affects 2.2 million vehicles, as reported by Automotive News. This is concerning as the company has expanded the lineup in recent years with new vehicles such as the all electric SUV Mustang and redesigned Ford Bronco.

The root cause of this extensive recall lies in a seemingly simple problem. Recall number 24V-031, documented by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reveals that some exterior A-pillar applique trim clip attachments in the affected Explorers are not properly engaged due to improper assembly or repair. Specifically, Explorers from model years 2011 through 2019 are impacted, and the consequence of clips not being securely engaged is the potential detachment of trim pieces during operation.

While Ford maintains that no accidents or injuries have resulted from this failure, an examination of incident reports suggests a significant number of occurrences. According to Ford’s chronology report on the recall, there are 568 Vehicle Online Questionnaire reports and 14,337 warranty reports detailing instances of the exterior A-pillar trim either detaching or missing. Notably, the report indicates that Ford initiated an initial investigation in 2018 at the NHTSA’s request. At that time, it was deemed “not an unreasonable risk to safety” based on the low mass and geometry of the part, aligning with the NHTSA’s assessment. However, the situation took a turn in February 2023 when the NHTSA opened its own preliminary investigation, ultimately acknowledging the safety hazard posed by plastic parts potentially flying off a vehicle.

In response to the recall, Ford issued a statement to Motor1 on January 22, indicating the company’s commitment to addressing the issue promptly. The statement reads, “Ford issued a recall Jan. 22 on certain 2011-2019 Ford Explorer vehicles for potential A-pillar trim detachment. We expect only 5 percent of the vehicle population to be affected and encourage customers to contact their dealership for an inspection when parts are available. At that point, customers will have free access to mobile repair and pick-up-and-delivery services at participating dealerships.”

The good news is that the solution to all of the Ford recalls in 2024 are relatively straightforward. Ford dealers will conduct inspections of the affected Explorers’ A-pillar trim and perform repairs or replacements as necessary to ensure secure fastening. The notification process for affected owners is set to commence in March. For those with concerns or seeking additional information, Ford customer service can be reached at 1-866-436-7332, with reference to recall 24S02.

Ford’s recall of 1.8 million Explorers due to potential trim detachment underscores the company’s commitment to addressing safety concerns promptly. While the recall adds to Ford’s already significant tally from the previous year, the automaker assures affected customers of a straightforward solution and offers support through inspections, repairs, and transparent communication channels.

Shifts in Super Bowl Traditions: Every Major US Automaker Stops Ads as Electric Vehicles Steal The Podium

None of America’s four largest car manufacturers—Ford, Toyota, GM, and Stellantis—will showcase national ads for the first time in 23 years as they all pull out of Superbowl LVIII. Instead, foreign-owned companies like Kia and Volkswagen are filling the gap, attributing the absence of the Big Four to challenges in the U.S. automotive market. Sluggish consumer demand and high interest rates are pressuring these manufacturers to reduce ad spending.

Superbowl Ads In 2023 Included RAMs “Premature Electrification” an attempt to make light of fears about the emerging EV market.

Car commercials during the Super Bowl have been a tradition, with Stellantis being absent only twice in the past 15 years. However, this year marks the first time since 2001 that none of the major American automakers are willing to pay the hefty $7 million fee for a 30-second spot, as reported by AdAge.

Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, mentioned a focus on preserving business fundamentals amidst the challenging U.S. auto market as the reason for their absence. Toyota, on the other hand, plans to “activate on the ground” with an engaging experience around the game, highlighting its status as the official automotive sponsor of the NFL. GM confirmed that none of its brands would advertise during the Super Bowl, emphasizing alignment with business priorities in media strategies. Ford did not provide immediate comments on the matter.

The auto industry, recovering from a tough 2023, faced a significant setback in its pursuit of Tesla’s dominance. Legacy manufacturers collectively invested approximately $100 billion in mass-market electric vehicle (EV) production by November. However, sales fell short of projections, customers reported reliability issues, and most EV models remained too expensive for the average consumer, despite tax credits.

Although none of the contacted companies explicitly cited the challenging 2023 EV market for the reason they are out of Superbowl ads, their earnings reflect the strain. Ford estimated a $4.5 billion cost for its EV division in 2023, and GM revised its EV production target downward, citing a slowing market. Even Tesla, the industry leader, reported its first quarterly loss since 2020 in the fall of 2023, facing a “moderate low-growth period.”

The broader industry outlook, marked by a 12% rise in American total auto sales in the previous year but still below pre-pandemic levels, further complicates the situation. Cooling consumer demand and manufacturing disruptions, including strikes and supply chain issues, paint a cloudy picture for the domestic automotive industry in 2024.

Out Of Superbowl Yet In With EV Strangleholds

Despite these challenges, this year’s Super Bowl will spotlight EVs, with Kia promoting its newly released EV9 SUV, and Volkswagen returning to Super Bowl ads after a decade, celebrating its 75th year of business in the U.S. Both companies have aggressively pushed their EV offerings, reporting over 60% annual sales growth as of October. However, they still trail behind Tesla, commanding 56.5% of the new EV market.

Beyond economic conditions, the timing might play a role in the Big Four’s absence, as Toyota, the NFL’s exclusive automotive partner, lacks major new product releases coinciding with the February 11 Super Bowl date. Morningstar analyst David Whiston notes that these ads are expensive, and Toyota might not have a vehicle needing such exposure.

A Journey Through Time: The Intriguing Transformation of a 1940 Ford Pickup with JDM Flair

In the pre-World War II era, Ford’s lineup, including coupes, sedans, and pickup trucks, shared mechanical kinship. Fast forward to 2024, envision the challenge of crafting an F-150 with the underpinnings of a late-model Taurus – a task distant from this F-150 JDM Swap pickup. This scenario mirrors the unique situation explored with a 1940 Ford Pickup, setting itself apart from its contemporaries.

Diving into the historical landscape of Ford pickups during the inter-war years, where the F-series had yet to carve its distinct identity, we encounter the entire lineup deriving from a single automobile. Our focal point, a 1940 Ford Pickup representing the fifth generation, holds a pivotal place in history, predating the F-Series’ divergence. The 1937 Ford, part of this lineage, featured underpinnings shared across coupes and sedans.

Original V8 Vs. Modern JDM

Let’s focus on the heart of these vintage Fords—the iconic Ford flathead V8 engines, a true automotive gem. Debuted in the 1930s, they represent Ford’s commitment to innovative engineering. Available in 136-cubic inch (2.2-L) or 221-cubic inch (3.6-L) options, they broke from traditional configurations, showcasing Ford’s innovation.

Renowned for smooth operation and robust power, these engines powered diverse Ford models, including the 1940 Ford Pickup. Their impact on the automotive scene endures. Enthusiasts, valuing their mechanical prowess, have a special fondness. These engines symbolize the golden age of American automobiles.

Contemplating the practicality of maintaining an engine spanning eight decades, despite its historical significance, prompts questions about its suitability for contemporary daily use. The historical prominence of the flathead V8 adds complexity to the restoration tale. These thoughts invite reflection on the delicate balance between preserving history and ensuring modern functionality.

Enter a surprising metamorphosis that transforms this 1940 Ford Pickup into a true standout. Breaking away from tradition, the truck now boasts a 3.4-liter, indirectly-injected Toyota 3B diesel engine sourced from a Land Cruiser. With 90 horsepower under its hood, complemented by an ’85 Land Cruiser’s manual transmission, dual-range transfer case, and Bilstein shocks, this restored Ford truck emerges as a powerful workhorse. Its capabilities far exceed those of its original state, showcasing a harmonious blend of history and functionality.

Final Thoughts On This Unique F-150 JDM Swap

This unexpected transformation not only adds uniqueness to the truck but also enhances its practicality significantly. It now stands exponentially more capable as a work truck than when it rolled out of a Ford Factory over 83 years ago.

The infusion of historical significance and augmented capability culminates in a truly unique 1940 Ford Pickup. By seamlessly integrating the Toyota Land Cruiser’s 3.4-liter, indirectly-injected 3B diesel engine, boasting 90 horsepower, this restored Ford truck undergoes a remarkable transformation. It goes beyond mere engine replacement, incorporating essential components like the manual transmission, dual-range transfer case from an ’85 Land Cruiser, and Bilstein shocks. As a result of these enhancements, the truck emerges as a powerhouse with unparalleled capabilities.

As this remarkable truck graces the stage of a Bring a Trailer auction, it brings with it an enthralling narrative. One that captures the imagination of enthusiasts. The amalgamation of historical charm and enhanced functionality creates a compelling story. This 1940 Ford Pickup is a captivating piece for those who appreciate automotive history and the thrill of a unique driving experience.

This unexpected twist in the truck’s journey not only revitalizes its essence but also transforms it into a symbol of resilience. It bridges the gap between the bygone era of Ford’s flathead V8 engines and the enduring power of a JDM surprise under the hood. It stands not just as a vehicle but as a testament to the evolution of automotive engineering, inviting admiration from collectors and enthusiasts alike.
