General Motors initiated the development of its Gen-III Small-Block engine in the early 1990s to replace the popular Gen-II V8. Chevrolet introduced the new 5.7-liter V8 engine, labeled LS1, in the all-new C5 Corvette in 1997.

The LS1 boasted an aluminum block and cylinder heads, incorporating steel or cast iron inserts for areas prone to high wear, such as valve guides and cylinder walls. Beyond weight reduction, the most significant departure from its predecessor lay in the firing order. The LS1 adopted a 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3 firing order, distinct from the 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 firing order of the Gen-II V8.

The horsepower output of the LS lineup ranged from 345 in the 1997 5.7-liter LS1 Corvette to 638 in the 6.2-liter LS9-powered ZR1 Corvettes manufactured from 2009 to 2013. The ZR1 LS9 engine boasted lightweight titanium connecting rods and a “2.3L Roots-style supercharger,” along with a 0.5-liter displacement increase compared to the original LS1’s 5.7 liters.

The Vortec name gained prominence with the 4.3-liter V6 utilized in GM’s smaller pickup and SUV lineup. The success of Vortec technology prompted its extension to cast iron-blocked V8s intended for larger pickups, SUVs, and some luxury sports cars. While the 5.7-liter LS remains popular, Vortec V8s are available in 5.3-, 6.0-, and 8.1-liter versions.

GM developed the LS V8 based on existing Vortec intake airflow technology and subsequently leveraged the LS design to produce the Gen-III Vortec V8. Consequently, the two engine types share more similarities than differences. Despite being cast from different materials, both engine blocks share identical mold designs.

This shared foundation facilitates engine swaps, as LS and Vortec blocks boast similar accessory mounting bosses. Furthermore, the abundance of cast iron Vortec V8s in scrapyards, coupled with their enhanced strength compared to aluminum LS engines, renders them highly sought after by high-performance engine builders.

Sharing its platform with the Pontiac Grand Prix and incorporating elements of the mid-size Chevy Chevelle, it boasted one of the lengthiest hoods to emerge from Detroit in 1970-72. Over the years, sales steadily climbed, peaking at 400,000 units annually by 1977. This particular inaugural Monte Carlo, hailing from Orr’s Island, Maine, has been sitting for quite some time but received previous upgrades, including a switch to a 383 cubic inch V8, showcasing its age through layers of dust.

The Monte Carlo, deriving its name from the city in Monaco, emerged onto the automotive scene as an exclusive 2-door hardtop model. The inception of this concept began gathering momentum in 1968, setting the stage for its anticipated debut in the Fall of 1969. However, the early sales trajectory encountered obstacles precipitated by a General Motors (GM) labor strike, resulting in a unique conundrum of heightened demand juxtaposed with a diminished supply in the early months of 1970.

Within its standard configuration, the Monte Carlo featured a robust 350 cubic inch V8 engine, contributing to its performance prowess. Notably, the model faced a temporary evolution during the years 1970 and 1971 with the introduction of the SS 454 version, an embodiment of enhanced power and sportiness. Regrettably, this variant ceased to exist with the comprehensive redesign undertaken in 1973, marking a shift in the Monte Carlo’s lineup dynamics.

Monte Carlo Barn Find

Claimed to be a one-owner vehicle with a history of garage storage, this Chevy underwent paint and vinyl top restoration in the 1990s but has largely remained inactive since. The engine was replaced, now equipped with headers and dual exhaust, while the original 350 engine is included with the car. Paired with a TH-350 automatic transmission, the Monte, showcased in dim garage photos, seems non-operational.

The finder posted the Monte on Facebook and is asking $10,000. We anticipate this will be a quick sell. With an odometer reading of just 68,000 miles, the engine swap suggests a pursuit of enhanced power rather than addressing flaws in the original engine. However, the lack of information leaves uncertainty regarding the steps needed to revive the car and whether years of inactivity have affected its body and paint.

The C8 Chevrolet Corvette, celebrated for its exceptional performance, recently achieved a remarkable feat on the drag strip, clocking an astounding quarter-mile time of 8.644 seconds at a speed of 170.71 mph. We’re not talking about your run-of-the-mill Grand Am, or some pumped up Mustang EV, we’re talking power! Good, old fashioned, power. This record-setting run underscores the impressive capabilities of the C8, particularly when in the hands of aftermarket specialists. The vehicle in question, a 2020 model, stands out as the first of the C8 generation to reach the 1,000-horsepower mark and break into the coveted 9-second category.

Extreme Turbo Systems (ETS), the ingenious minds behind this powerhouse, have transformed the Corvette into a high-performance drag racing machine. The modifications are extensive, featuring a pair of turbochargers, a nitrous system, Mahle Motorsport pistons, Carillo connecting rods, ARP head and main studs, and a secondary fuel system with C85 in the tank. The integration of a MoTeC ECU plays a pivotal role in orchestrating this symphony of power.

The MoTeC ECU not only manages the complex array of aftermarket upgrades but also empowers the vehicle to deliver the exceptional performance witnessed on the strip. Notable features include the ability to launch at 2,800 RPM with anti-lag and between five and six pounds of boost, a significant departure from the factory launch control’s limitations at 3,500 RPM. Additionally, the ECU affords ETS the strategic control to ramp up boost incrementally as the car accelerates down the track.

In a conversation with Motortrend, Zack Morgan, the race team manager for ETS, shed light on the intricate details of their racing strategy. Morgan highlighted the utilization of 17 psi in the first gear, a boost increase to 26 psi upon shifting into second, and a gradual addition in the third gear. However, the team faces a unique challenge during the fifth-gear shift, requiring a reduction in power to prevent overwhelming the clutch.

Interestingly, Morgan identifies a particular component in the transmission as the unsung hero of the setup – a pressure box that increases line pressure by 10-15%. This enhancement proves instrumental in ensuring optimal power delivery to the rear wheels, solidifying the transmission as a key player in the overall performance of the vehicle.

Despite the cutting-edge technology at play, Morgan hints at untapped potential, noting that the team currently operates within certain RPM constraints due to limited access to the transmission control module’s software. This limitation forces them to maximize power output below 6,500 rpm. However, the impressive quarter-mile run suggests that the existing setup is working exceptionally well.

As the team continues to push the boundaries of performance, there is anticipation regarding future tuning possibilities. The unexplored realms of the transmission control module’s software could potentially unlock further speed and efficiency, hinting at a future where this already groundbreaking Corvette becomes even faster on the drag strip. After spending 30 years tucked away in a dust blanket, this 1968 Corvette barn find convertible underwent a transformative first wash by YouTuber Mid-Year Mitch. Despite the initial allure of a clean exterior, Mitch uncovers hidden issues during the process.

The Back Story

A year ago, Mitch acquired this silver hardtop convertible from its barn sanctuary. The vehicle, untouched by water for three decades, became the focus of Mitch’s restoration project. His excitement was palpable, and he meticulously documented the cleaning process on his channel. Despite the paint appearing surprisingly nice after a pressure wash, a closer inspection uncovered blisters on the passenger door and scattered blemishes.

Before the spray-down the 30 years of dust was pretty thick, but the body was straight, with no major issues.

The exterior cleaned up nice with a pressure wash, but the interior and components such as the wiring are another story.

Rescued from its barn slumber, the first-year C3 boasted a factory-fitted 427/435 tri-carb engine. However after closer inspection, this turned out to be a replacement engine, a late ’69 427/435 Chevy crate engine block. That Interesting detail just adds juice on to the story. The exterior may appear respectable from a distance, but a detailed look at the mechanical components reveals a less promising reality.

Despite a thorough engine bay cleaning, nests created by critters over the years hint at the challenges ahead. Mitch acknowledges the need for substantial effort, time, and funds for a proper restoration. While the engine’s external condition raises concerns, Mitch remains optimistic about its internal state and the three carburetors.

Delving deeper, Mitch uncovers many issues. Among them, a rusty gas tank, rotted exhaust system, brittle vacuum lines, worn-out bushings, and compromised wiring. Acknowledging that driving it as-is would mean chasing numerous issues, Mitch proposes a body-off restoration to address the multitude of challenges.
