Elon Musk’s Plea: Sleeping on the Production Line May Be Needed

Elon Musk has issued a warning to Tesla workers, indicating that they may need to reside on the production line to facilitate the construction of the company’s upcoming mass-market electric vehicle (EV).

During Tesla’s Wednesday earnings call, Musk disclosed plans for the production of Tesla’s next-generation EV, slated to commence in 2025. He emphasized the necessity for engineers to inhabit the manufacturing line at the Texas factory, stating, “We really need the engineers to be living on the line.” Musk underscored the demanding nature of the production ramp-up, suggesting that workers would be required to sleep on the line itself.

This proposition isn’t unprecedented, as previous reports have surfaced of Tesla employees resorting to sleeping on factory floors to meet production deadlines. Musk himself has admitted to spending extended periods within Tesla’s manufacturing facilities, including sleeping beneath his desk for three consecutive years.

The anticipated next-generation vehicle, dubbed “Redwood,” is expected to enter production in the latter half of 2025 at Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory. Rumors have been circulating that it could be a new EV SUV with a rapid release date. However, Musk acknowledged his tendency to be overly optimistic with timelines and couldn’t provide an exact production estimate for the new EV.

Musk highlighted the significant technological advancements involved in the production process, expressing confidence in Tesla’s manufacturing capabilities. He described the forthcoming manufacturing technology as “next level” and superior to existing technologies worldwide.

The announcement coincides with Tesla’s long-term goal of introducing a more affordable EV, projected to be priced below $30,000. Either way, now that an announcement has been made and Tesla workers warned, tensions are set on edge. This initiative comes amidst heightened competition from Chinese EV manufacturers prioritizing affordability, with BYD recently surpassing Tesla as the world’s largest producer of electric vehicles, although BYD’s cars are not yet available in the US.
