Revolutionary Supercar Crafted from Spider Silk Promises Unprecedented Strength and Lightness
A groundbreaking endeavor in the automotive world is underway as a US company Velozzi explores the possibility of creating a spider silk Supercar. A material proven to be five times stronger than steel when thousands of nano strands form larger silken ‘cables.’
Spidey Tek, a biotech company committed to mass-producing spider silk, spearheads this ambitious project. Utilizing state-of-the-art research and insights from Utah State University’s Synthetic Biomanufacturing Facility, the company efficiently grows proteins by infusing them into alfalfa. Afterward, they extract the silk. Then they weave it into fibers, and blend it with carbon fiber. This results in a material that outshines traditional options like carbon fiber, aluminum, or titanium. The innovative blend not only enhances strength, but it also provides a lighter and more flexible alternative.

Roberto Velozzi, the driving force behind this revolutionary supercar, envisions the creation of 100 naturally-aspirated, V12-powered two-seater supercars. Collaborating with Dr. Randy Lewis from Utah State University, the goal is to seamlessly integrate spider silk with carbon fiber. Thus crafting a more robust material for the body and chassis of the Velozzi Hypercar.
Is A Spider Silk Supercar Expensive?
Boasting a formidable price tag of $3 million, Velozzi envisages his creation as the epitome of strength and lightness within the supercar domain. Despite the potential delay in the 2024 launch, the company actively anticipates delivering these groundbreaking supercars in a span of three to four years. This proactive approach underscores their commitment to introducing high-performance, efficient, and resilient vehicles that are set to redefine automotive standards. Velozzi’s foresight aligns with a transformative era, where innovation takes center stage in shaping the future of exceptional driving experiences.

The aerospace and medical sectors are actively expressing a profound interest in spider silk. Especially those captivated by its exceptional strength and inherent natural antigen qualities. In a strategic move towards innovation, Velozzi is pioneering a groundbreaking approach by seamlessly blending spider silk with carbon fiber. This visionary step holds the significant promise of crafting an enhanced composite material that goes beyond conventional boundaries. The integration of spider silk with carbon fiber not only represents a novel methodology but also signifies a transformative leap forward. This pioneering technique stands poised to act as a catalyst, heralding the advent of the next generation of extraordinary vehicles that embody superior performance, resilience, and efficiency.
